The Istanbul Archaeological Museums Directorate has been assigned to conduct archaeological excavations at the points where Üsküdar, Sirkeci, Sultanahmet and Yenikapı stations will be built within the scope of the Marmaray and Metro construction works, which are two of the most important transportation projects in Turkey. Our largest excavation area, Yenikapı, was a port area on the Marmara coast of Istanbul during the Byzantine Period. During the excavations carried out at the Theodosius Port, thirty-one shipwrecks of various sizes and types have been reached so far. Since archaeological studies on shipwrecks require a different area of expertise, our museum has authorized the Istanbul University Department of Protection and Restoration of Movable Cultural Assets to document, remove, complete the conservation-restoration work and prepare them for display in the museum. The team, which started its work with a large staff, has so far removed and preserved eleven shipwrecks according to international standards. This book in your hands clearly reveals the work of the Istanbul University team using the latest technological possibilities, the importance they attach to the subject and their scientific approach.
