The Ancient Near East is an important region that roughly extends from the Levant to Syria and Mesopotamia, where the first civilizations of history rose, and connects the Asian continent to the European continent, opening up to Anatolia. This region also includes the Northern Syria region, which has always had strategic importance in ancient times and was always sought to be kept within the sphere of dominance by the powers of the period. Surrounded by the two core cultures of the Ancient Near East, Mesopotamia and Egypt, this region has always maintained its strategic and commercial importance. As in many regions, rivers are at the forefront of geographical factors in Northern Syria. For example, the Orontes River, which originates in Lebanon and flows into the Mediterranean, is very important in terms of the agricultural production of the region. On the other hand, the Euphrates River, which changed the course of world history and raised civilizations, reaches from Eastern Anatolia to the southeast of Anatolia and from there to Syria. In addition, the deserts in the region have also affected the structure of the region. Although the desert areas in the region cover a very large area, there are also useful lands for agricultural practices in the coastal areas. In lands not suitable for agriculture, trees such as cypress, cedar and fir, which can grow in the climate conditions of the region, were cultivated. The most common other production materials in the region are grapes, olives and olive oil; these production materials, which have significant economic value for ancient societies, made the region important and lively in terms of trade. Another feature of the region is some ports located on the seashore and the trade network in which these ports are located. Trade routes coming from today's Afghanistan, Tajikistan and the lands further east, and from this region where Lakes Baykal and Baykaş are located in the northeast, crossed the Zagros Mountains and the Tigris River in Mesopotamia, advanced in front of the cities on the Euphrates and reached the ports on the shores of the Eastern Mediterranean. From here, the trade route, which also included Alachiya (Cyprus) by sea, reached the ports in the Central Mediterranean. Therefore, the Syrian region, which is on such an important route, has become attractive to many states throughout ancient history. As is known, the Hittite State changed the political structure of the city-states in Anatolia in the 2nd millennium BC and brought them together under a union, and thanks to the successful policies it implemented, it first strengthened its authority in Anatolia and then outside of Anatolia.
