The Phrygians, believed to have entered Anatolia around 1200 BC, began to form their central structure as early as the 10th century BC in the light of recent archaeological findings, and became one of the most important political rulers of Anatolia from the 9th century BC onwards. Although many studies conducted on the Phrygians to date have defined them as a foreign community that entered Anatolia around 1200 BC, the origin of this powerful civilization, which deeply influenced the Iron Age process of Anatolia, continues to be debated in the scientific world.
This study primarily aims to compile and bring together the publications and discussions on Phrygian culture and civilization that are currently quite scattered. In line with this purpose, an effort has been made to present the historical geography, political history, material and spiritual cultural elements of the civilization in essence, and in the light of the latest archaeological data, an attempt has been made to seek answers to questions about the identity of the Phrygians, which has been the subject of debate.
Independent of questions such as who the Phrygians were or where they came from, the most important issue that needs to be focused on is their contributions to Anatolian culture. At this point, the most important conclusion we can reach in line with our current knowledge is that the cultural structure that the Phrygians put forward not only made them a local society of Anatolia, but also, over time, turned them into a main station that transferred this ancient and deep-rooted culture to the West.
