“I saw that Allah was making the sun of state rise in the Turkish constellations and turning all the skies with their sovereignty. He gave them the name of Turk and made them sovereign and made them the sovereign power of the time. He gave them the administration of the people of the time and made them the leaders of the people and supported them on the right path. He glorified those who followed them and followed their path, granted them everything they wanted and protected them from the torment of mischievous people. [Then I understood that] it befits a wise man to follow the path of these people in order to be protected from becoming a target for their arrows. And there is no better way to make one’s troubles heard and to win their hearts than to speak their language. When an enemy comes to them out of fear and takes refuge with them, they make him safe. Then someone else takes refuge with them and his harm is warded off. I heard the words of a reliable scholar from Bukhara and also from a scholar from Nishapur. Both of them narrated with their own chain of narration: The Messenger of Allah (pbuh): While he was talking about the signs of the apocalypse, the chaos of the end times and the emergence of the Oghuz Turks, he said, ‘Learn the Turkish language, because they will have a long-lasting sovereignty.’ If this hadith is true – and the responsibility lies with those who narrate it – learning the Turkish language would be a very necessary task; if it is not true, then reason requires it.”
Dîvânu Lugâti't-Türk is the first dictionary of the Turkish language, written by Kashgarli Mahmud to teach Turkish to Arabs and to show that Turkish is a language as rich as Arabic. Written by Kashgarli Mahmud after traveling through the Turkish provinces of the period and based directly on the language material he collected, this book in your hands is not only a dictionary, but also a grammar book that indicates the linguistic features of Turkish in the 11th century, sheds light on phonetics and structure; a source of personal, tribal and place names; an encyclopedic work that contains rich information on Turkish history, geography, mythology, folklore and folk literature, and also provides information on the medicine and treatment methods of the period. Since the work was written with the purpose of teaching Turkish to Arabs, it was organized as a dictionary from Turkish to Arabic, and approximately 8000 words were determined as entries. In order to provide a better understanding of the meanings of the words in the headings, examples from idioms, proverbs and poems were given and their Arabic translations were also made. The work also includes the “first Turkish world map” showing the places where the Turks lived and the nations they were in contact with. This work, translated into Turkish by VakıfBank Culture Publications under the name Dîvânu Lugâti't-Türk – The First Dictionary of the Turkish Language, meets its readers with a comprehensive index that makes it easier to use.
